Weather Eagle®110 - Alert Eagle®120
NOAA Weather Radio Receiver and SAME Decoder

Overview:

The Weather Eagle® 110 (WE110) high performance NOAA weather radio receiver and the Alert Eagle® 120 (AE120) SAME decoder with diagnostic functions are designed for simple and reliable operation in moderately high RF environments with a helical filter and significant RF shielding.

The WE110-AE120 is sold as one combined unit in a 1RU 19" standard rackmount configuration and accepts a standard BNC VHF antenna. It is highly recommended to utilize an external antenna with a lightning surge arrestor and low loss RF cable. Thunder Eagle is happy to preprogam the AE120 SAME codes (events and locations) to make the unit plug and play.

For almost 30 years the WE110-AE120 has reliably delivered National Weather Service (NWS) severe weather alerts through interfacing with many types of communications systems in many important venues. These include public schools and universities, large public assembly areas such as national race tracks, all levels of local, state and federal government and the military, fire departments and emergency management, factory public address systems, trunked radio systems, fire alarm systems, and automatically unlocking FEMA tornado shelter doors.

When a TI-100 is added to the WE110-AE120, NWS SAME alert messages can automically create text and email messages which can also appear on Thunder Eagle websites. The NWS often uses Thunder Eagle equipment to ensure that the NOAA weather radio system is properly functioning.

WE110 NOAA Weather Radio Receiver Features:

  • LEDs indicate channel selection (1-7)(162.400 MHz - 162.550 MHz), scan mode, live and playback.
  • Switches for manual channel selection, scan mode, reset, last warning, mute receiver, play and live modes.
  • Pressing scan automatically finds the strongest NWR channel.
  • The last scan selected channel will remain on power cycle.
  • All switches are remotely controllable by logic inputs from a 15-pin connector on the rear of the unit.
  • Menu settings can be configured using a standard terminal communication program such as Hyperterminal (9600 baud 8-N-1).
  • 1050 Hz lock LED will be on solidly while the NWS alert signal is being received.
  • 1050 Hz led will flash randomly when the NWS is transmitting normal audio.
  • BNC antenna connection for external 50 ohm antenna.
  • Draws less than 200 milliamps at 12 VDC.
  • Muted and unmuted line level unbalanced analog audio RCA outputs.
  • Highly sensitive at least 0.40 uV for 12db.
  • FCC Part 15 and Industrie Canada type accepted.

AE120 SAME Decoder Features:

  • The AE120 decodes and filters NWS SAME alerts by event and location.
  • Thunder Eagle's free FipsFileMaker™ software creates a text file of selected events and locations.
  • Thunder Eagle's FipsLoader™ software is used to upload the match file into the AE120.
  • Thunder Eagle is happy to preprogram the AE120 for plug and play installation.
  • Upon a matched event and location a double pole double throw relay closes until the EOM (end of message) signal is received.
  • FSK Lock led lights solidly as the NWS SAME message is being received.
  • The last decoded SAME alert message is digitally saved into the AE120 and can be output on the RS-232 serial connector.
  • Disanostic LEDs show alert match or no match and EOM decoded.
  • Holding in the Last Alert button on power up outputs the event and location match file for verification of setup.
  • The Reset button mutes the WE110 speaker and opens the alert relay to manually reset the system.
  • The Test button runs the WE110/AE120 though a one minute alert cycle to aid in installation and troubleshooting.
  • An RCA audio-In connector on the AE120 enables the system to be tested with recorded .wav audio files of actual EAS/SAME alerts.
  • Sample SAME audio files are available for download from this web site under support.
